11 things, as the wedding photographer, I do want to tell you, but can’t

11 questions to ask a photographer

1. How do I pick a good photographer when there are hundreds listed in my area?

Once you’ve got a few favourite photographers, narrow it down to a handful of favourites, and set up a time to meet them. Make sure you’re meeting with the person who will be wielding the camera at your wedding, not a sales consultant or studio owner. You have to, like, trust and get along with your photographer — that way you can leave the magic of photo making in the photographer’s hands. Not only should you like their images, but you should also like them! You’ll be spending many hours with them during your wedding day.

2. How many photos do I get?

The wedding photographers typically deliver 50-100 photos for every hour of coverage they provide. Four hundred photos may seem like a lot, but your wedding photographer is preserving all those little details and the moments you missed while you were mingling.

3. I love those photos with the blurry backgrounds. How do you get that look?

You’re talking about shallow depth of field. Photographers get that look by using professional lenses that can focus tightly on the subject.

4. I found one photographer whose images look soft and pastel, one whose images look clean, and one whose pictures look like they were shot on old film. What’s the deal?

Every photographer has a different way of editing their images using computer software (the high-tech version of a darkroom). This process is called “Post-Processing.” Most photographers do some basic lighting and colour adjustments, but you can also use editing software to create a unique look. Three popular styles right now are:

Clean: lightly processed to appear natural
Matte: a low-contrast look with muted pastel colours, similar to vintage film
High Contrast: a vibrant look with rich colours that pop
It doesn’t matter which style you go with, as long as you love it! I prefer Clean and High Contrast with extreme care about natural light while taking the photograph. This is craft based on years of experience, learning from world’s best photographers, trying to shoot every single wedding better than the last one.

5. Why is wedding photography so freaking expensive?

This is the question I see most from brides on the interwebs. Wedding photography seems like easy money — work for one day and rake in cash, right? But most full-time wedding photographers I know and including me carry over €15,000 worth of wedding gear and often work 60-hour weeks. (Remember those 800 images from question #2? It takes several full days just to edit those – for me anyway because  I edit every single picture separately. Some photographers use presets, one click, 10 minutes break for coffee, and it’s done – whites are grey, blacks are grey. Ok, it’s a style that you might like, but the amount of work is significantly different.

Add insurance, taxes, software, advertising, albums, repair, shipping, and many photographers end up making less than minimum wage for the first few years of their career.

6. How can I make sure I look good in my photos?

The truth is, sometimes people wind up hating their wedding photos.
Relax. Trust your wedding photographer.

If you’re relaxed, it’ll come through in your photos.

Leave some breathing room in your schedule, so you don’t feel rushed — I recommend a minimum 30 minutes for family and wedding party photos, and an hour for the couple portraits.

Oh, and get plenty of sleep and drink lots of water the night before.

 Wedding-day hangovers are not fun.

7. I keep hearing about “shoot and burn” photography. Sounds painful. What is it?

Actually, yeah, it can be kind of painful. “Shoot and burn” is slang for photographing a wedding and burning it straight to CD or USB without post-processing. It’s usually super cheap — for a reason. Bad lighting isn’t corrected, distracting elements aren’t removed.

Digital files may be important to you, but find a full-service photographer who will edit the images and print the album.

What do you do with your wedding photos after the wedding?
What did you do with your photos after the wedding? Do you have them up in your house? Do you have an album?
And please, don’t let the digitals rot on your hard drive. As a photographer, I want you to proudly display your wedding photos. It makes me sad when I think of all the photos that never get printed. Don’t hide your wedding photos! I tell my clients to hang up a large print or two — when you’re having a crappy day, it’s great to look up in your living room and see a photo of an awesome day.

8. Should we do a “first look”? And, um, what the hell is a “first look”?

The first look is a chance for wedding couples to see each other privately before the ceremony. Two-thirds of my clients currently opt to do the first look. It’s a great chance to get the wedding jitters out and spend a few minutes alone together. I find that first look photos tend to be some of my favourites. It’s a real moment with real emotions.

Honestly, it’s also a great way to avoid stress on your wedding day. (Some of my couples even choose to get ready together!) And many of my couples get to enjoy their whole cocktail hour because they got all of the photos out of the way before the wedding.

9. Do I really need a second photographer?

No one needs a second photographer, but they can provide you with more images and a different perspective. Many of the top photographers only work with assistants who carry gear and help with professional lighting. The best thing is to ask your wedding photographer to see how they prefer to work. You can get good results either way. I prefer to work on my own. There are important enough thinks to focus on your big day!! I do not like to worry that I might have my second shooter on the photograph because he spotted the same moment to capture. All the photographs on my website are taken by me.

10. How far in advance should I book a wedding photographer?

Many in-demand wedding photographers book weddings at over a year out. As it gets closer to your wedding date, it will be harder to book your first-choice photographer.

I work on a first come first serve basis. Most of the dates are booked in a two-year advance. I take the only limited number of weddings each year.

If your favourite photographer is unavailable on your date, don’t panic. Ask them for recommendations — they may know someone with a similar style and a lighter schedule.

11. You can Photoshop that, right?

It depends on a few things. As a photographer, I want to get everything as perfect as possible in-camera. Posing, location scouting, and camera settings can “fix” most things before I even click the shutter. If your uncle photobombs you, I’m going to retake the photo — it’s much easier to get the photo right than to fix it with Photoshop. Many photographers charge for extensive editing in Photoshop because it can be very time-consuming.

Hopefully, this clears up some burning questions about wedding photography — and makes it a little bit easier to find the perfect photographer for your wedding day. Check what kind of wonderful experience other couples had by having me around on their wedding day!!

Amazing !!!!! We are so happy! Thank you for being great on the day. It was all so enjoyable and you put us a really at ease. Look forward to meeting up when we get back x Caroline and Ciaran

Jakub from QubArtStudios is a gentleman and was a great addition to our Wedding Day. Initially, we were reluctant to do the engagement session, as naturally, we are not comfortable being pictured (rough and ready), but Jakub was so enthusiastic and encouraging, it made the experience very easy and so worthwhile, as we were way more relaxed on our wedding day. We found that he guided us when we needed it and then gave us the freedom to be natural and enjoy the special moments together and with our guests. Our family and friends were very impressed with Jakub on the day and commented that they didn’t notice him clicking away in the background and we’ve had so many compliments on the pictures we’ve seen so far. My best friend has now booked QubArtStudios for her wedding in 2017 and we would highly recommend you meet with Jakub to discuss your big day! 🙂 Suzanne & Albert

We cannot recommend Jacob high enough. We knew that he was taking absolutely fantastic pictures, but the ones that we got from him even exceeded our expectations. He was professional, helpful and funny. Even if I was a bit nervous about posing he put me on ease and the final result was just amazing! He managed to capture such a moments, that we were laughing and crying watching the presentation he provide us with. What we absolutely loved was the photo album, so pretty and classy. Thank you Jacob :* Elizabeth & Gary

Jakub did a brilliant job at our wedding. His presence was unintrusive, and he blended into the background beautifully, yet managed to capture both all the key moments and so many subtle ones too. Jakub was with us throughout the day, from the moment we started to get ready, until the guests left. But most importantly, the photographs that he took were excellent! They were beautiful and really captured the day for us, and indeed many parts of the day that we missed ourselves. They look amazing and we will always treasure them. We couldn’t recommend Jakub highly enough! You won’t regret choosing Jakub! Colm & Irene

Hi All, I would just like to take some time here to review my fabulous photographer of our wedding day. Jakub was superb, he really captured the essence of the day and went over and above to help. I would strongly recommend him to anyone, especially if you want to capture some really cool and special one-off moments. I have his photographs all over my house. Thanks again Jakub x Caroline & Ciaran

Dear Caroline and Ciaran. Long ago I had found out that I did not function well in the studio, that my imagination needed the reality of the outdoors. When you put people there starts to be interesting. But when you find yourself in the in the middle of the wedding day – for many most important day in their lives, that is a mind blowing. It is an addiction – capturing all the amazing moments of that day. I do remember every moment of your wedding and what I had in mind taking certain images. You are an amazing couple. Thanks so much for your kind words. Jacob

We would absolutely recommend QubArtStudios to shoot your wedding!! Jakub was great (and patient when it came to getting all of us girls ready). Dear Martina and Clive Thank you for your kind words. You will always be very special to me. Jacob

We met Jakub at our best friend’s wedding. We were planning our wedding at the time. And we had most of the things organised. There are so many great photographers out there and we couldn’t make up our mind. And then there was Jakub. Most of the time almost invisible. Taking shots from the distance, not interrupting. We had a chat, then met. We loved his style. Natural colours and that attention to perfect light. And we knew, we didn’t have to look any longer. A few weeks later we saw an amazing 3D presentation and the album from our friend’s wedding. Wow! Cannot wait to see ours! Niamh & Cormac

Jacob has such an amazing talent for capturing ‘moments’ which is exactly what you want on your wedding day. It’s not the formal photos that remind you how great your day was – it’s the natural fun and excitement that is so important to be documented. Jacob’s ability not to miss a moment is incredible, and his energy and passion come across in the photos. He is able to blend in so well that your guests and literally will not realise they’re being photographed. We could not recommend Jakub more. Zane & Cormack

Dear Bride and Groom-to-be, if you are currently looking for the perfect photographer for your wedding – Jakub is your absolutely best choice! He has a unique gift of being able to capture the most important moments, those emotional and also funny ones and you will still look great in his pictures. We had fun with him but when needed he was almost invisible and he can dance too 😉 Jakub thank you so much for your professionalism and outstanding humour. Our guests couldn’t stop talking about you. Thank you! xxx Linda&Conor

Dear Elizabeth and Gary, Oh I am professional, helpful and funny! To hear that from you both is a great honour. Watching how emotional Gary got seeing you at your most beautiful as his bride and me taking that shot gives me shivers even today. Love you guys. Jakub
